It dates from the Napoleonic era and would have been made by a French prisoner ... made the prisoners of war some money, as they would have sold them to British military officers.

Gudin was a veteran of both the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars. He attended the same military school as Napoleon, and is believed to have been one of the French emperor's favourite generals.
