For the new Polo GTI VW has ditched the smaller engine, instead opting for a downsized version of the 2-litre unit found in the Golf GTI and R and the Polo GTI’s close rival Audi’s S1.
That remains to be proven. Electrification also means that, after 49 years and more than two million sales, the updated, eighth-generation Golf GTI ‒ a Mk8.5 in VW-speak – is the last of its kind.
