Kauila in Hawaiian Culture: Pre-contact Hawaiians did not have regular access to metal. Therefore, the hard dense wood of kauila was particularly valuable in the construction of items that other indigenous people made of metal such as tools and weapons. Additionally, the wood was used for hale beams, game pieces, and musical instruments.

Kauila refers to two species of trees in the buckthorn family, Rhamnaceae, that are endemic to Hawaiʻi: Alphitonia ponderosa and Colubrina oppositifolia. Their wood was prized for being extremely hard, and is so dense that it sinks in water. Both occur in dry to mesic forest and are now rare; C. oppositifolia is listed as Endangered.
Kauila was by far the preferred wood for spears, but mamane, uhiuhi, and koa were also used. Malo (1903) mentions ‘olapa and lo’ulu palm wood for spears. Kauila was valued for its strength and relative weight as well as its ability for a point to remain sharp and unbroken.

Kauila wood was used for many purposes including house beams, kapa beaters, fishing spears, netting needle or shuttle, javelins, spears, daggers, shark-tooth clubs, ‘o’o, guessing games pieces, ‘ukeke, repairing bowls, pestles, and amulets (“Kauila, Kauwila,” n.d.).
