Messina Cathedral: history, architecture e artwork - The World of Sicily
Earthquakes in 1693 and 1783 severely damaged Messina Cathedral and the subsequent one in 1908 almost completely destroyed it. The church was rebuilt following a design by architect Francesco Valenti but suffered further damage in 1943, during the bombing of World War II.

One of the major cities on Sicily, Messina was heavily involved in the rivalry between the Anjou dynasty in Naples and the Aragonese House of Barcelona. Initially a stronghold of Anjou support on Sicily, in 1282 the city joined the revolt of the Sicilian Vespers, resulting in the city being subjected to a major siege by Charles I of Anjou.

On the 28th December 1908 an earthquake destroyed Messina leaving in its wake 60.000 victims and the city a heap of ruins. The Cathedral was quite completely destroyed; only the perimeteral walls and the apses remained standing. Archbishop D’Arrigo began the reconstruction, that was continued by the new Archbishop Angelo Paino.

After the fall of the Roman Empire Messina declined, but it recovered itself in the 14th century under the rule of the Aragonese, and later the Spaniards (17th century). The town revolted against occupation by Spain, but was retaken after a siege of four years and severely punished (the University and Mint were closed).

In the course of history, it has been destroyed and rebuilt several times so that practically nothing remains of the original structure of the building.
