The majority of Australia's weather radars are operated by the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM), an executive agency of the Australian Government. The radar network is continually being upgraded with new technology such as doppler and dual polarisation to provide better now-casting.

In this paper we describe the evolution of Australia’s weather radar network, from it’s foundations as an upper-air wind-finding network, through to today’s network which provides processed real-time data for the public, forecasters and for quantitative hydrological and weather applications.
