Dec 28, 2012 · I didn't think he seemed unsocial. I think it seemed more like he was out-of-sorts from having his morning smoke interrupted by a strange old man who was very insistent on putting Bilbo through the inquisition about his "good morning". Then Gandalf mentioned "Adventure" and Bilbo got all huffy and irritated, which definitely happened in the book.

Gandalf is good-humouredly mocking Bilbo for his euphemistic language and verbal irony - firstly for using "Good Morning" to basically mean Go away among other things, and then "I beg your pardon" to mean What?, and I apologise but I don't know what you're talking about.
