2023年9月20日 · If you previously had a switch and only two wires (not counted ground - green or bare), then no, you cannot add an outlet. What you have is a switch loop - hot from the panel (via the outlet or light box) and switched hot back to the outlet or light. For the outlet, you also need a neutral wire. There is no getting around this.

The point was that binding the earth ground wire to the metal casing behind the outlet doesn't do anything if the outlet casing isn't grounded. You see this often when old 2 prongs outlets are replaced.

Then its load wire would come into the GFCI outlet as its line cable and there would be one load cable to the next outlet and then that outlet would feed the last outlet on the circuit.

It is not a code requirement to split the top and bottom of the recpts, however it is fine to do that, but it complicates the GFI functions. Splitting the top and bottom would require two GFI's upstream, one feeding each of the legs. More common would be two single pole GFI breakers in the panel. With that said, your situation is different.

SOLVED :D New GFCI outlets won't work, but old one works fine!
2023年9月9日 · In desperation, I cleaned the many layers of paint off the old GFCI (not tamper resistant, and hence no longer up to code), and it worked no problem - as does the secondary bathroom outlet that it connects to. Each time I hooked up the wires, from first to fourth install, I copied how it was wired from the old outlet to the next exactly.
