They come in a few different body diameters and lots of lengths, I mostly use #9 or 10 for reinforcing tool pouches or putting buckles on straps.

Get much bigger than that and you are catching it on things like seatbelts, door jambs etc. We'll be making right hand crossdraw sheaths in this tutorial but to make a left handed one you just flip everything around.

I think the right kind of knife sheath would suspend the blade away from the sides of the sheath so it can dry if damp and there is no chance of the edge being dulled from the sheath material or debris that has gotten trapped in the sheath.
