But how did this amusement park transform from a marshy boating lake in the late 1800s to a home for some of the country’s most unique roller coasters? Here are some highlights over the decades that illustrate the cultural significance of this Utah icon.
History - Lagoon
Originally called Lake Park, the resort that would become Lagoon opened on the shores of the Great Salt Lake on July 15, 1886. Visitors enjoyed an open-air dance pavilion, roller-skating, water sports, target shooting, a bowling alley, and a mule-drawn merry-go-round.
Timeline – Lagoon History Project
1981 – Golf-Fun becomes Putter Around The Park and includes obstacles based on popular Lagoon rides. 1982 – UFO opens for one season. A new amphitheater featuring live entertainment opens south of Roller Coaster.

Lagoon kicked off the water park’s first full season in 1990 with another party throughout Memorial Day weekend. There were performances by a steel drum band and a special show called Aqua Magic, created especially for Lagoon-A-Beach by a New York magician.
