On August 20, 1982, the newly restored N&W ‘J’ class 4-8-4 No. 611 left Birmingham for Roanoke, VA where it was built in 1950. Over the next 12 years, from spring to fall, it operated almost weekly around the N&W and Southern Ry. Systems. Due to work, I was able to chase many of the trips over the early years.
