What is Luffa?

Luffa is edible! Picking luffa at the right stage is essential for a great tasting luffa. look for one that is small and not to think as the fruit will still be nice and tender. Once the luffa gets larger it begins to form the sponge like structure becoming tough and unenjoyable for eating. I prefer to cook mine with butter and garlic and the luffa adds a nice subtle nutty flavor similar to a squash or zucchini. Luffa is one of the most rewarding plants we've ever grown in the garden. You can eat it when young, let it climb all over your garden for a beautiful aesthetic, AND harvest it when it matures, cut it up, and use as a scrub brush or shower sponge. The trick to growing luffa is to start it early indoors. The seeds are large and hard, so clipping or scraping a TINY bit of the edge will help moisture get inside the seed and speed up sprouting. Growing Luffa for the first time was a highlight of our 2022 gardening season. Kimberly and the boys helped at every step! We readied the trellis, planted the seeds, and watched them sprout and quickly take over more space than we had planned.
